Diversity in Tech

Create a kind of “user experience” description with text, photos, drawings, or any other visuals that supports diversity and empowers those commonly left out or undervalued by the mainstream.  Consider the suggestions below from Harvard B-School Review.

The following are ways to empower yourself, your colleagues, or your team by focusing on the benefits of diversity, equality & inclusion.

  • Understand and promote the value of diversity. Particularly in a field driven by innovation, like tech, a big part of your job will likely involve continuously pitching new ideas. That’s why diversity of thought, experience, and background is so essential.
  • Join communities and groups externally. Diversity comes in many forms, but whatever community you are part of, there are likely networks out there designed to support you in tech. The more you participate, the more connections you will make — with allies, mentors, and people who may be able to refer you for jobs down the line.
  • Research if your potential employer empowers diversity/push your organization to do so. Even simply Googling a company’s name, along with the word “diversity,” can teach you a lot.
  • Find a mentor/Be a mentor. While finding a mentor outside of your organization can help you understand the industry, internal mentors are key to navigating corporate culture and office politics, or the unwritten rules around what it takes to succeed.

Given the strategies above, and any other ones you can think of, make a list of ways to alter the design of an app or platform, or create a new kind of platform that promotes the benefits of diversity.

One possible approach may actually be designing or supporting ways to overcome the difficulties of diversity like creating mutual understanding, or finding common values between cultures, or addressing differences.

Can your team propose a “user experience” that would make a person who is not in the majority feel valued, comfortable, and safe?

Your task:

1-Describe the experience
