1. A place that fills that role – as well as being the most aesthetically comparable place to Craig Mod’s description of a kissa I know – is The Store Ampersand on Mill St in Orono. This is a small store and bakery with a limited but variable selection, an organic bent, and a cluttered-but-warm atmosphere. The store was, and to my knowledge rather continues to be, a staple of leisure time for youths in Orono, especially kids attending the school district. When I went to Orono Middle, and, to a lesser extent, High School, an after-school visit to Ampersand was often a focal point of the day, providing a much-needed break and nourishment in taxing afternoons of homework and planning a way to get home, especially before I got a driver’s license and had to rely on my parents for the commute.

Notes from discussion:

Composition is largely good (good shots with most all of these!); a few square shots might be made more balanced / readable by cropping to 3:2.

The tone is melancholy but not necessarily pessimistic which is good to hear. Content is usually clearer than I had thought. Patrick liked choice of setting.

My more unconventional shots like going through the window of the store were deemed readable enough and very worthy in terms of content.

2. Focusing on capturing a moment is the biggest conceptual change I could make in my story. My story is overall focused more on static, untimed elements due to the subject, but I feel like that all the more emphasizes the need to find some temporal moments and movements that connect to that subject, both to create pacing and contrast, and to express the dynamism that exists in a seemingly static place and contextualize that stasis.
