Ryan Waryck – Project 1a

Story Location 1 – My Front Yard

This is the front yard in the house I’ve lived in my entire life. Having been here for so long, I’ve been able to see how it’s grown and changed, and notice all the ways that it’s been shaped by human interference. Despite growing up here, in the past however many years, the most time I’ve really spent in it is the time i spend walking from the front door to my car, or at the very most, the time I spend with my dog on the porch.

Story Location 2 – Campus

This location feels obvious, but I spend a lot of time here without ever really thinking too deeply about my surroundings, so I thought it’d make a good possible location for this project. For these photos, I just walked the usual routes I always walk and took notice of things that stood out to me or that I hadn’t noticed before (such as the posters behind the bushes). Campus is definitely the location where I spend the second-most amount of my time, besides my house, so it’d be nice to be able to take notice of it in a deeper way

——————– ANALYZING STUDENT EXAMPLE ——————————

https://tributaries.shorthandstories.com/solitary-quarantining/index.html

key insight: The usage of chapters to section the story and have a sense of progression inspired me for how I could format my story

shortlist of techniques:
-narrative timeline
-Usage of chapters
-images static while paragraph scrolls
-progression of images from monochrome to more detailed and vibrant

techniques could be improved:
-incorporate more photos in the story.
-more interesting text and formatting.

What’s working:
I like having it sectioned off into various headers focusing on various aspects of the story. This could be helpful for me, focusing on either different timeframes or portions of the yard. I also like the formatting of these with the large images.

Photos
working:
-good photos
-photos provide good context to the story
-photos convey emotion appropriate for the tone of the accompanying paragraph
would improve:
-make formatting more interesting
-potentially add more

Story
working:
-strong and relatable beginning
-strong narrative ending
would improve:
-try to find smoother transitions between each portion

—————— WHAT STORY ARE THE PHOTOS TRYING TO TELL? ————

As of now, after looking at the photos I have taken and the student example, the main headlines / parts of a story that stand out to me are the following

-How the area has grown and taken over objects (Boat, truck, bathtub, etc.)
-This part could focus on how the area has grown since I was a kid, and the parts that I notice change and parts that change suddenly. Photos visibly showing age could lend to the narrative of things growing and changing, and I think that could be a strong narrative portion, talking about how I’ve grown with the area

-Things that I’ve never noticed before (stone rabbit, under stairs, etc)
-This part would focus on images with smaller details and telling adding to the story with the fact that throughout all this change, things have appeared that have gone unnoticed and I’m only now beginning to take note.

-How beings have shaped the area, and how the area has beings (pigs, dog, deer, etc)
-This part would focus on how the area fosters life and showing all the lifeforms besides me that live in the yard and how their relationship with it differs and is similar to mine, and something about how I’m only now noticing it despite the wildlife being here longer than me.

——-

Start with the run down parts of the yard, before opening up into noticing more and more of the           details gone un-noticed and more and more of what has changed.
boat -> pigs -> garden
story of the growth, and story of me noticing the change and forming a relationship with the area.

——peer feedback——-

-most interesting photo is the carpet/nature, could follow man vs nature
-create a more coherent narrative between sections
