Project 1 review – Ryan Kelley

Looking at Grace Cesarini’s post titled, “The Cliff Walk; A Dog’s Path”:

I really like the title sequence being displayed over a clip of the churning water rather than a still photo, it makes the webpage capture attention and is an easy way to add movement without any complex animations playing, which can sometimes draw attention away from the content for a story like this.

The technique of the last photo being blurred in the background of the more important takeaway text feels much more impactful than the other text-over-photo block in the middle of the webpage. This keeps the final message from being drowned out by the detail of the accompanying photo.

Photos

    • What’s working? I like that the layout is less than symmetrical and that a variety of photo sizes are used to give a mixed gallery feel.
    • What would you change/improve? There’s a banner photo placed right above the last message that would probably look better as a footer beneath it. The only other thing is that one of the photos was put in twice, once before and after Thor’s passing, which makes me wonder which dogs are shown in it.

Story

  • What’s working? The emotional impact of the story being shared is something that a lot of people can resonate with and may find comfort in.
  • What would you change/improve? I want a dog now which is a problem. I’d like to know where these cliffs are, I haven’t seen this place before.

Layout/design

  • What’s working? The photos and layout progress with the story and work to add more context and visual interest for the reader.
  • What would you change/improve? Other than that banner being moved to the footer, the only thing I could even think of would be a visual transition before the section talking about Thor’s passing, but it could also be a choice to have it be more abrupt.
