Read, then write a post about something that serves this purpose in your family’s life—maybe parents, children, and grandkids all know it. What do places & people have to do with culture?
Something I found interesting about the article is that they described the food and coffee as “eh” and “sometimes good,” but raved about the energy in the Kissa. The description of the man reading the news about world events, booing and celebrating political moments while the “little old ladies” laugh with their coffees reminded me of your average family kitchen. Even if the food is not always perfect, the energy in the area was the most important thing. The energy was warm and welcoming, similar to a family kitchen, or maybe even a grandparent’s house. Place & people connect us and create a welcoming, safe space, which is essential to culture. I liked how the author said that if he came 20 years ago, it would have been almost the same as it was for him then.
Observations about the video
Maybe try a parallel during the day; show how different the environments are during the daytime.
For my story specifically, I think static photos are the best way to go. Since I am playing on the loneliness aspect of the night, the purpose is for it to be too static, with not much movement. Almost a liminal space.
The “moment” I am going for is sort of the “lack thereof” moment. Stillness, no people in view, no cars, nothingness. However, that is a still moment.
In terms of a subject, some of my photos do have a subject, but some of them don’t have one definitive subject, which is strategic. Some photos are sort of meant to look like a subject is missing.
For example, the building isn’t a clear subject in this photo. The building is a background character to the setting. The true subject is really more the emptiness in front of it. The light also is not the subject, but rather there as a way to illuminate the emptiness and amplify it. The path is there, but it doesn’t quite read as a subject either, in my opinion.
However, I do have some photos with a clear subject, for example: these 2 benches are the subjects of my photos, but it’s not just about the bench, but the lack of a person on these benches. Despite focusing on something, they’re still empty/lonely.

I do want to take a photo of some dead-looking trees with some leading lines. (DONE) Will add to project 1c. Another thing I think could be cool is if I had a subject in each photo that sort of showcased the emptiness. For example, there being nothing around a small object, making everything else look larger. I am also learning how to play around with exposure, warmth, contrast, brightness, etc., so I hope to continue with that.
