The first location I went to were the flood plains behind the apartment I am renting. It is just passed the railroad tracks and is an interesting place to explore. I first went back here with my friend’s last year and we have been returning ever since to hang out and light up. It is filled with animals, life and nature which add to the vibes. As a place it is mellow and chill, with many hidden aspects, offering relaxation and excitement simultaneously. This is also a good place to discover which is the underlying principle of all places.
The second place I explored was a residential area near my place. I followed the roads beginning from my place and working my way down towards the river. On the way I stopped and took photos of some things that were interesting. This place is somewhere that I am around a lot because of my living position in Orono. I often take these roads to the river to fish or just stretch my legs. There are some really wicked homes and gardens and little trails so it could be a fun place to explore and photograph.
Photos
- I found that the perspective choices of the photos to work very well. I think that it stands out as it puts the viewer into unique positions, viewing everyday scenes, like the inside of a house, in different and new ways. This is something that I would try to capture in my project because I felt that my photos are very static and focused on the view, In a place that I think can offer very interesting stylistic images.
- Something that I would change is the photo of the bedroom window. The story around the photo is about the recurring view out of this window during lockdown. However I think that the window with the blinds down does not show the view. I would either open the blinds to see the view or I would use the reflection of the window to show the inside of the room.
Story
- I think that the story works well with the photos by showing to the change in attitude that came with the “opening the door”. Going from black and white to color photographs shows this change from isolation to openness.
- I would maybe change the written story to include more details of this persons home since the photos are mostly in the home. Maybe a change from the home as a place of isolation to a place of community?
Layout/design
- I really liked how the pictures were lined up and the page would be filled with the photos.
- I would have put the littles captions for each photograph in the gallery at the bottom of the page so you don’t have to scroll and find them.
Peer review: I thought that the photographic style, with the more colorful, hard-lit, and slightly more lo-fi look, as well as the content of the photos themselves, really contributed to a more timeless and placeless look which reminded me of the aesthetics I associate with certain photos from the mid-late 20th century – Zane’s Feedback for Project 1a
