I chose Chris Jordan’s piece Circuit boards, Atlanta, 2004.
I thought the piece was impactful for commentary on e-waste, while also being a compelling and beautiful photograph. The layout of the square circuit boards and how they were arranged looks similar to the aerial shot of a modern city—think Albuquerque—that was preplanned on this grid format and common infrastructure; you see buildings, streets, fields, without those things actually being there. When you zoom in, you can see its beauty, though it is not meant to be artistic.
The impact is the scale, the amount of these boards discarded makes you think about it more intensely– especially since the photograph proposes the feeling of continuity.
