Project 2b – Meghan Fay

American Dream

Situation:

My subject is stuck in a crowded room, either a bar, restaurant, etc. The noise becomes too much and the subject seems too aware of their surroundings. The voices around them are too loud, the clinking of the glasses is too much, the lights are too bright, so they end up leaving. Even as they go back to their car and drive away, the noise is too loud.

Desire:

The main character is striving to get air, and an open environment. They don’t know why they want it, or what they necessarily want, but there is a serious motive that is driving them to nature. The subject goes to sleep wondering why they’re suddenly unhappy with the hustle and bustle of their life.

Conflict:

What gets in the way of the main subject is their attachment to their “normal” life. They signed themselves up to work a 9-5, go to noisy bars, and live in a routine, but there is obviously some sort of passion for the outdoors, and the feeling as if they’re missing out on something with the life that they set up for themselves.

Change:

When the subject goes to sleep, they dream of themselves on the water on a cold day. There is a drastic difference between the heat of a cramped bar and a tiny apartment to the beach that they’re standing on. They stand there as if they’re really there, and it’s almost impossible to figure out if this is a dream or a nightmare. This part of the video focuses on the subject’s five senses, and how it plays into the fact that this is what they are missing with their “routine life”.

Result:

The video ends with the subject waking up in the same bed they fell asleep in, but obviously alarmed and deeply upset. The subject grabs their jacket, and instead of going to their office job, they put in their GPS for the ocean, and break the routine of their corporate life. They realize the importance of breaking free from the standard American dream and fulfill their basic human needs.
