Project Name:
Trails For Tomorrow
Situation
The Penobscot River Trails is a new trail system and nature preserve, winding quietly along the Penobscot River’s edge, where forests and wildlife is abundant, but this conserved land once fueled timber harvests for the paper mills.
Desire
Locals and visitors long for recreational spaces that also nurture ecological health and getting the local youth outdoors.
Conflict
Past industrial impacts and new land uses collide with today’s conservation goals, challenging the balance between use and protection.
Change
Trails are built with minimal disruption; wildlife flourishes and outdoor education programs shift community attitudes toward stewardship.
Result
A regenerative future is visible: locals bike through a renewed landscape, wildlife sightings are on the rise, and the trails serve as vital spaces for community healing, learning, and connection.
