Project 1c – Phoebe Ackor

  1. I love the story that you’ve made here, Phoebe. When we’re little, many of us take our family home for granted, either because we want to leave and grow up as soon as possible, or because we came back so often that all the details of the rooms became background noise. Your writing does well at describing how, on returning to the place of our youth, specific spots or light displays can bring back fleeting glimpses into a past, which can become a source of comfort as we grow older.

The photos of each room are gorgeous, too. I like the choice to make them black and white, to mimic an older camera and invoke memories of the past, and to let the striking contrast between lights and shadow take center stage. The photos of the imprinted sunlight through the window in a dark room stir up nostalgia in me, calling to mind how nice it was to wake up as the sun rose each morning when I was younger, the warm rays gently nudging me awake as I lay nestled under my blanket. It was definitely better than having to wake up to a phone alarm, that’s for sure.

The dynamic aspects of the page fit the theme very well, with images and text gradually peeking into view like long-inactive synapses firing and bringing back an old memory. The dark gray complements all the photos nicely, and I like how some standalone pictures have a shadow behind them, like they’re photos pulled from a family scrapbook.
