What I Saw and What I Missed
In Joline’s feedback from Project 1c, I was encouraged to expand my storytelling to allow readers to really immerse themselves into these spaces throughout my home and help them understand more about the shaping of my character. When polishing this final project I tried to do just that. For each of my photos I would close my eyes and picture the exact location, shadow, or piece of architecture. Then, I pieced together some of my most prominent and influential memories that took place within these locations to evoke feelings, sounds, textures, and emotions. This was helpful for crafting a more intimate relationship between image and text.
When taking my photos, I simply used an iPhone and tried to capture interesting patterns whether it be light or architecture. I most likely could have yielded better results if I used an actual camera or had richer knowledge on photography, but I tried to put into practice some of the techniques that we learned about in class.
I really wanted my project to feel cohesive through both design and story. I chose to keep the color palette of my website dark, in shades of black and white because it highlighted the stark contrasts of my images. It was also important that I have an all-embracing theme that my project would follow, so when taking my photographs as soon as I noticed a pattern I ran with it. This helped me immensely in relating such widespread memories to one another.
Inspirations/tips
All of my classmates had really beautiful stories and images that took a lot of hard work, but one project in particular that I felt inspired by was Caramon Controneo’s “Solitary Quarantining”. Their storytelling feels cinematic, like a character ‘s monologue playing over a montage of memories. It’s a harmonious narration alongside images, just like a scene in a film. This inspired me to deepen my storytelling so that my text and images could work better together in creating an intimate depiction how I grew up, since that was my project’s theme.
