Video Proposal
For my Project 2, I will create a short film that utilizes wide camera shots to capture the expansive natural landscapes of Maine, paired with close-up transitions that highlight overlooked details, such as native plants, textures, and small insects. The contrast between broad and intimate perspectives will encourage viewers to see both the scale and subtlety of the environment. Inspired by the visual storytelling of Hayao Miyazaki, the film will focus on quiet observation, inviting a deeper appreciation of nature’s hidden beauty. The project will rely on natural light, ambient sound, and minimal editing to maintain an organic, immersive feel.
5 Storyline Method:
-
Situation: A wide landscape in rural Maine appears still and ordinary at first glance.
-
Desire: The camera seeks to uncover the hidden life and quiet beauty within this familiar natural space.
-
Conflict: These small details. Bugs in the grass, native plants, and rich textures are often ignored or unseen in the vastness.
-
Change: Through slow transitions from wide shots to close-ups, the camera reveals a vibrant, intricate world teeming just beneath the surface.
-
Result: The viewer gains a new appreciation for the layered complexity of the natural environment and the value of slowing down to notice it.
I made this experimental wide shot as a practice: https://youtu.be/9Wclx311W90
My inspirations were :
Princess Mononoke: Spirit Forest sequences — moss-covered trees, kodama, mist moving through the forest.
My Neighbor Totoro: Mei exploring the garden, chasing small bugs, lying in the grass, discovering acorns, and plant textures.
