Assignment 2a – Jack Brooks

In Class Exit Ticket

The thing that stuck out from Princess Mononoke is the fact the values of the characters depends on where they come from. The story starts out with the Emishi Village, which is a settlement that lives in harmony with nature. They serve as a balance between human civilization and nature/spirits. Irontown is shown as humans resilience against nature. They value production and innovation, while not realizing that it is destroying the land. The forest is where the third act takes place and is shown as a calm peaceful spiritual place where nature lives in harmony. This is where life is created and ended, but shown as a peaceful thing.

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind shows a different kind of relationship between civilization and nature. The story starts after a civil war where the planet has been ravaged. Many of the decisions made throughout the story are a reaction to what has occurred to the planet and the growing dangers of toxic sports.

The thing that stood out to me about the solar punk video was the idea of a harmony which both Miyazaki movies tap into. Both movies have the theme of humans and nature trying to harmoniously exist together. They both show what humans can add to nature when trying to work together, especially in Nausicaa.

Proposal and Inspiration

My proposal is inspired by the nature video where someone went out and captured nature. The way it was shot and the camera movements are what I plan to take into my video assignment. I went out and tried to capture a similar shot with my phone. In my head I clearly remember the scene in Princess Mononoke after the creature has his head returned where the nature all begins to regrow and take over Iron Town. By the end you wouldn’t even recognize the town as nature has taken back the land. For my video proposal, I want to tell a story about preserving the forrest in Maine.

Situation

Maine is currently 89% forest the most in the United States. We have a very strong forrest.

Desire

The desire is to preserve the forrest for generations to come.

Conflict

There are people who want to get rid of the forrest and make money off of it

Change

Changing how we make money and how we preserve the forrest.

Results

Working together in order to create a balance where people can make money, but we also preserve the forrest.

Tips Most Valuable

Trying out unique camera angles.

When shooting on iPhone I try to put the camera in areas that a traditional camera wouldn’t be able to go. That is the benefit to using something mobile.

Uses different camera modes

When using my phone camera, I use black magic which has many different camera modes and ways to adjust what your camera sees. From focal length to filters.

Using a gimbal.

I use a gimbal to stabilize the camera movement and to move the camera smoothly in ways not possible with your hands.
