Project 2a – Phoebe Ackor

Sample Video

Inspiration Models

Pride and Prejudice 2005 Film – Use of soft light while highlighting the tranquil and beautiful aspects of nature. The environment adds so much to the story as if it’s a character.

The Lorax – speaks on deforestation and human greed contributing to pollution, shows the harmful impacts on animals especially.

Jane Goodall’s National Geographic Documentary “Jane” by Brett Morgan – Highlights how it’s possible to have a balanced and kind relationship with nature. More specifically, how to treat animals fairly.

5 Line Story Method

  1. Situation (what’s the starting point) – In a hopeful future, Maine’s ecosystem and residents live harmoniously with one another, creating a balance between human and nature.
  2. Desire (what does the character want?) – Video should inspire people to appreciate the beautiful things in Maine’s ecosystem you might otherwise overlook.
  3. Conflict (what gets in the way?) – Us humans are a huge threat to our own environment and before we know it we will have permanently damaged all of the beauty and good that our ecosystem provides.
  4. Change (What happens that shifts something?) – We take action to heal our wrongdoings by planting, clearing dams, and saving energy.
  5. Result(How does it end?) – Maine’s ecosystem grows stronger and heals with each bit of effort put in to preserve it.

Video Proposal

My project will be a soft, poetic, nature-focused video that highlights the beauty of Maine’s environment. It will serve as an inspiration to give back to our environment and preserve the wonders we risk losing. Through various footage of wildlife, plant life, and bodies of water, the video will portray the harmony that can exist between humans and nature. It will also include the consequences of neglecting our environment and explore how human actions have contributed to a lot of harm. I’m drawing inspiration from films that capture nature’s most magical moments, as well as those that show us the negative impacts of human actions today.

Video Tips I Think Will Be Important

  • Using slow-motion to add depth to the footage, allowing consumers to really take in the scene.
  • Using color grading to make all your footage cohesive.
  • Taking shots from other angles besides eye-level to make it more interesting and suspenseful.

Princess Mononoke

Themes of human versus natural environment, with visuals of earth, wind, fire, and water. The princess’s life is tied to the forest’s life putting into perspective how the forest is just as alive as her. It highlights the importance of balance between humans and nature through multiple different perspectives. It also put into perspective just how hard it can really be to be in tandem with the natural world. It takes time and determination.

Nausicaa

Highlights the importance of having empathy for all beings, not just humans. Visually you see different climates and use of fire to depict an apocalyptic conflict. Learn to understand before you fear. Communication is so important when trying to resolve conflict.

Solarpunk

Sparks ideas for an ideal future where humans and nature live harmoniously. Shows us what a true balance between human and nature could look like.
