Task 3 – Ashley King

  1. Your story idea/plot–what happens, what are the main events?

My story is going to be about a naive, trusting college student who’s safe comfy world is turned cold and threatening when she discovers she has a stalker. One night, when leaving her school, she will receive a notification from her phone that an airtag has been detected moving with her. Confused because she doesn’t own any airtags, she then searches her car and finds one shoved under her license plate. This event makes her aware of her stalker, and shatters the image of her perfect, safe world. After the police are not able to help her, the characters whole world comes crashing down as she is left wondering if she’s safe, if she’s still being followed, who’s following her, and most importantly why. As her frustration with the situation builds, she eventually makes the decision to take matters into her own hands and try to solve this mystery on her own.

The airtag part of the story will be loosely based on my own personal experience. I want to use this as the way that the character becomes aware of her stalker because before I had it happen to me I never even considered that people used airtags to try to track people. I now know that it is actually a fairly common method used by sex traffickers and stalkers. I am lucky enough that I had an iphone, and that it notified me, but if you don’t have an iphone, you would have no awareness of this. I want to use this story to raise awareness of some of the tactics stalkers use, and encourage people to be aware of their surroundings.

  1. Your main character
    1. I don’t have a name for my main character yet. The main character is going to be a female college student. She is going to be overly naive and trusting of people. Outgoing, popular, and beautiful, she is well liked by almost everyone she meets.
    2. The lie my character believes is that everyone is deserving of her trust. This lie is fueled by her misconception that she needs to be liked and get along with everyone. Believing that all people are inherently good, and thinking that her kindness and trust will be reciprocated.
    3. The character wants to see the good in everyone and believe that people are inherently good. I think this want will be fueled by a deeper want to be liked and accepted by everyone. The character needs to realize that in reality people are not black and white, and that not everyone is deserving of her trust.
    4. I am having trouble determining what my character’s ghost would be. I tend to think of a ghost being something negative or terrible, but my characters back story is supposed to be very positive, leading her to be the trusting, innocent person she is. What kind of ghost could a person like that have that ties into the story? What specific event could lead my character to trust people so much?
  1. The main setting of the story and why it’s important to the main character.

The story is going to take place in the town that the main character grew up in. The character is attending her local college. The character grew up in a safe neighborhood, surrounded by caring neighbors and other kids her age. Her childhood was relatively uneventful. Few crimes happened in her town, and the crimes that did happen were nothing but the acts of adolescent miscreants. Even though her life is changing as she begins college and reaches adulthood, the character feels safe and comfortable because they are familiar with the setting.
