Parker Gray – Task 4

1. Why does your character believe the Lie?

– Mark believes the lie that success is solely determined by achieving what he believes to be a normal experience for someone his age, He thinks conforming to societal expectations is the only way to secure his own happiness and stability.

2. Is there a notable event in his past that has traumatized him?

– Mark experienced bullying during his high school years, leading him to believe that financial stability and a successful career are the only ways to avoid hardships.

3. If not, will there be a notable event in the First Act that will traumatize him?

– No, as Mark’s trauma is established in his past, his actions as a character will show his ultimate feelings towards the sub

4. Why does the character nourish the Lie?

– Mark nourishes the Lie because it provides a sense of control and security, aligning with his fear of instability and loss. He believes that climbing the corporate/social ladder will shield him from vulnerability and future tragedies.

5. How will he benefit from the Truth?

– Mark will benefit from realizing the importance of personal fulfillment, relationships, and following his passions. Embracing this Truth will allow him to break free from the confines of societal expectations and pursue a more authentic and satisfying life.

6. How “big” is his ghost? If you made it bigger, would you end up with a stronger arc?

– Mark’s ghost is significant but not overwhelmingly big. Expanding on the impact of his past bullying struggles and how it shaped his worldview could enhance his character arc, providing more depth and emotional resonance.

7. Where will you reveal his ghost? All at once early on? Or piece by piece throughout the story, with a big reveal toward the end?

– The ghost will be revealed piece by piece throughout the story, with subtle hints early on through Mark’s actions early on, and a more profound revelation in the middle of the narrative. This gradual approach will add to a more wholesome character arc.

8. Does your story need the ghost to be revealed? Would it work better if you never revealed it?

– I would say the story benefits from revealing Mark’s ghost as it adds complexity to his character, explaining his motivations and providing a source of internal conflict. Keeping it hidden might result in a less impactful character arc and less understanding of his journey throughout the story.
