Climax Scene –
As the evening chugged on. My phone buzzed insistently in my pocket. Adjusting my eyes, I pulled it out to see Lip’s name flashing on the screen.
“Yo.” I answered, trying to keep my voice casual despite the sinking feeling in my stomach.
“Mark, buddy, where are you?” Lip’s slurred voice crackled over the line, filled with urgency.
“I’m at a friend’s place,” I replied, glancing around at the smiling faces continuing the conversation around me. “Why, what’s going on?”
Lip let out a drunken laugh. “Forget about that, man. You gotta come to the house right now. We’re going two for two nights in a row, and we need you here.”
I immediately knew I didn’t want to leave Mary’s party, for the rowdy chaos of my own home. “I don’t know, Lip,” I hesitated, torn between loyalty to my fraternal friends and the curiosity of the new ones that surrounded me now.
But before I could voice my concerns, Lip’s tone turned threatening. “Come on, Mark, don’t be a buzzkill,” he slurred, his words dripping with manipulation.
My grip tightened on the phone as anger began to take over. With a deep breath, I made a decision.
“I’m not leaving, Lip” I said firmly, my voice steady despite the tremor of uncertainty.
There was a moment of stunned silence on the other end of the line before Lip’s voice exploded in a flurry of expletives and insults. But I didn’t stick around to listen. With a decisive click, I hung up, and slipped my phone back into my pocket.
Turning back to Mary and her friends, I felt a sense of relief wash over me.
“All good?” Mary asked.
“All good.” I shrugged.
