This course introduces techniques, historical contexts, and conceptual approaches to artificial intelligence as a creative medium. Through the semester, we will look at important issues related to AI such as the cognitive science debate on theories of mind; the impacts of AI on society as intellectual labor is replaced by algorithms; and the divide between autonomy and authorship in working with AI for artmaking. In the process, students will be introduced to different movements and techniques within AI, such as cybernetics, artificial life, nouvelleAI, expressive AI, neural networks, genetic algorithms, machine learning, and deep learning. They will directly apply their understanding in creating original works using these approaches.
